Formed in 2001 and initially funded by the National Education Association, the Southern Illinois Education Alliance seeks to build cooperative structures to achieve excellence in education.

- Expand articulation and communication among educational partners and with the wider community.
- Promote and provide professional development leading to quality instruction.
- Enhance awareness of teaching as a profession among middle, high school, and college students.
- Support retention and practicing educators.
- Promote access and use of the latest technology and the Internet in the delivery of instruction.
- Expand diversity education activities among the partner institutions for a greater impact on students and educators.
- Identify and recruit future Alliance partners.
